CLUB THORP

As the UK Manufacturer and Type Certificate holder of this classic light aircraft design by John Thorp, we wanted as many pilots as possible to experience flying the unique Thorp T211A. We also discovered that the majority of pilots longed to fly something a little different, but financial constraints often meant that most had to be content with hiring older two-seater singles.

With the changes to the PPL, particularly the 13-month Certificate of Experience under JARFCL - meaning that the minimum hours would be increasing - we looked at ways of providing PPLs with an attractive low-cost nationwide Club scheme. CLUB THORP is that scheme - it provides members with an number of unique membership features:

NATIONWIDE MEMBERSHIP   In 1998, AD Aerospace started the scheme from two airfields in the UK. There are now three Clubs, based at White Waltham, Carlisle and Liverpool.

The scheme will provide members with the opportunity to not only build hours at very low-cost, but also to have the chance to fly from other CLUB THORP airfields within the UK. In the future and because of continued interest, we plan to place other Thorp T-211s in other areas although this will not happen in the nest 12 months. Club Thorp can operate in any country that is within the JAR-FCL community.

LOW-COST PPL HIRE   At just £5.00 per hour Dry, we feel that CLUB THORP offers members a fantastic opportunity. For the first time you can actually budget your flying knowing that you belong to the organisation that actually built the Thorp T-211 aircraft and look forward to a years flying at affordable prices.

For further information about Club Thorp, please contact AD Aerospace and not the airfields. Thank you.

So how much? Here's a typical example:

Let's assume a typical PPL flies 35 hours per year and hires generally at a realistic and inclusive £70.00 per hour. Those 35 hours equate to an annual outgoing of just under £2,500 per annum. With CLUB THORP, the same PPL flying 35 hours would have an annual outlay of about £1,500.00.

Here's how it works:

Club Membership (One-off , Transferable): £500.00
Annual Costs
Monthly membership @ £55 per month: £660.00
35 hours @ £5 per hour Dry £175.00
Fuel/Oil for 35 hours flying (assumes £15.00 per hour) £525.00
Total £1,360.00

Or 35 hours @ £38.85 per hour

SUMMARY   So if you fly an hour or so each month, for the same budget, membership to CLUB THORP will provide more flying hours and save you money into the bargain. In short, the new Thorp T-211 is being offered by the manufacturer direct to the PPL community - essentially at cost. The net result is that the membership of CLUB THORP have the opportunity to fly a new and quite different aircraft - available from a number of European locations - at attractively low prices.

How many members per CLUB THORP airfield group? Well, the good news is that each CLUB THORP group will be strictly limited to a maximum of just twenty members. It means that in terms of flying time, each CLUB THORP flying group should enjoy good availability.

The Thorp T-211 has been described in glowing terms: "Instructors will love the T-211A and students will quickly appreciate the classic stick and rudder handling, while both will enjoy the open cockpit on a hot day" - Pilot magazine.

We want you to be one of the growing bands of aviators who have experienced flying the Thorp T-211.
